EVA Webinar
Are you serving Gỏi Gà or Oriental Chicken Salad?: Culturally Relevant and Appropriate Approaches to AAPI Choral Music

Monday, May 4th | 7:00 PM ET

How can we all make responsible choices about repertoire, how it's taught, and how it's performed while making it accessible and palatable to all singers?

Using examples of AAPI Choral music and drawing on their experiences as American-born children of immigrants, Penelope Cruz and Alexander Nguyen will discuss issues of culturally appropriate and relevant practices and repertoire choices, whether one is OF the culture, of an ‘adjacent’ culture, or has no little experience in and with an AAPI culture.

Penelope Cruz is a Filipino-American born in Wisconsin who is currently the choir director at White Plains (NY) High School and is President-Elect of the Eastern Region of the American Choral Directors Association. And a proud groupie of EVA and Elevation and BBNB! Alexander Nguyễn is a Vietnamese-American born in California who is an arts administrator, choral conductor, and singer based in Philadelphia. He currently serves as the Assistant Conductor of Elevation and as the Associate Conductor of the Singing City Choir of Philadelphia.
