The Chicana Art Song Project is a multi-disciplinary endeavor aimed at giving voice to Chicana (female Mexican-American) artists in literature, music, and the visual arts. The Chicano movement gained momentum in the 1960s and has yet to achieve its goals in most art forms. The movement supported the advancement of civil rights and education reform among Mexican-American citizens in the United States. The project creates a new genre of classical vocal art song of the Chicana tradition/culture and provides a medium for future artists to explore in multi-media performances.
This new genre would allow a new generation of artists to feel connected to music that speaks to their own experience of growing up Chicana and increase awareness in the classical community of our beautiful culture and traditions. In essence, this music sounds like a meeting of classical and Latin rhythms and sounds. The project pushes aural boundaries and has the potential to broaden one’s capacity for mixing tradition/culture. It offers an alternative to the traditional classical repertoire for singers, pianists, and other musicians.
